Melanie Amaro was born on June 26, 1992; she is a Virgin Islander-American recording artist who won the first season of The X Factor in 2011. She was the youngest contestant to win the competition. Melanie was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida but was raised in the British Virgin Islands by her grandmother.
Melanie was sent to the BVI to live with her grandmother Catherine, after her parents, Hipolito and Debra felt they did not have the means to provide for her. She was later reunited with them when she was 15 where they were able to mold her into the person she is today. Later, Debra persuaded her to audition for “The X Factor.” Judges and viewers were blown away by her voice.
Melanie has two brothers, Mark and Mike, and a younger sister, Maya.
Her mother, Debra says, “when Melanie was about six months old, she would get up at around two o'clock in the morning and would start singing in her crib.” Though she never entered any singing competitions as a child, she performed at weddings, churches, and other events.
Melanie has released several singles and is excited about the path her career is on. "This music that I’m working on now– bomb. I spend hours in the studio, I was writing. With a lot of things that have happened over the years, it’s kind of broken my confidence here and there, but I always come back from it."
